THE gunman who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday night and was quickly shot dead has been named.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was "neutralised" by Secret Service snipers shortly after opening fire on the former president at the open-air event in Butler.

The crowded rally was held at the Butler Farm Show grounds, where sprawls of open fields are understood to have given Crooks perfect visuals of Trump.

One audience member was killed in the attack and two critically injured. The victims have not yet been identified.

Shocking pictures from the scene showed blood smeared across Trump's face in the moments after the shooting.

Shooter Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is said to have positioned himself on the roof of a manufacturing plant roughly 200 feet outside the cordoned-off rally zone.

He was later shot dead by counter-sniper officials who returned the gunfire from the roof of another building nearby.

Officers said they do not yet have a motive for the shooting but have confirmed they are calling it an assassination attempt.

The FBI said Crooks did not have any ID on him at the time, with officials identifying him through his DNA.

An AR-15 was reportedly recovered near his body.

A spokesperson for the former president released a statement in the early hours: "President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act.

"He is fine and being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow."

Bethel Park is located about 40 miles south of where Saturday's rally was held in Butler.

The airspace over Bethel Park has been shut down "immediately" for security reasons.

What we know so far:

The FBI confirmed in a statement during the early hours of Sunday: "The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on 13 July, in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation."

Anthony Guglielmi, chief of comms for the bureau, confirmed that Crooks was "neutralised" by Secret Service agents on the scene

Voter records in Pennsylvania, according to NBC, list a Thomas Matthew Crooks with the same birthday and address as a registered Republican.

Chaos erupted shortly after 6pm on Saturday when Trump took to the stage to address Republican voters.

Minutes later, bullets could be heard ringing out, with Trump seen hitting the deck as security personnel swarmed the former president to protect him.

Astounding images from the scene showed secret service agents swarming the former President as he hit the deck, before rushing him into a car and whisking him away.

Other pictures showed Secret Service snipers on a roof nearby - poised to fire back after shots rang out.

The 2024 hopeful later said he felt a bullet rip through his skin as it pierced the upper part of his right ear.

A shocked eyewitness described the moment he saw the attempted assassination on Trump - claiming he'd warned Secret Service agents about someone with a rifle on a roof nearby.

Trump thanked law enforcement for their swift response to the gunfire, offering his condolences to the families of those affected.

"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," Trump wrote on Truth Social hours after the shooting.

"Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

"It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead.

"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.

"Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Blood was seen pouring from Trump's right ear as he raised his fist to the crowd before being whisked away from the stage by federal agents.

Both Republicans and Democrats have condemned the brutal attack, with President Joe Biden calling the heinous crime "sick."

Trump Rally Security

Donald Trump was reportedly shot at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, June 13.

Trump's rally was held at the Butler Farm Grounds, which can hold tens of thousands of people.

There were 8-10 metal detectors at the grounds, according to Former USUN Ambassador Kip Tom.

Tom told CNN that anyone within a certain distance of the president was required to enter through those metal detectors.

Despite being held at an open fairground, the rally was fenced-in, meaning a perimeter was set up.

Counter snipers from the Secret Service were stationed in the area to monitor the perimeter.

In addition to metal detectors for the public, plus local and state police, the Secret Service is assigned to protect the president.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped to cover Trump after he appeared to be shot.

"We have practiced for these situations thousands of times," Jonathan Wackrow, former agent, told CNN.

CNN also reported that the Secret Service shot and killed the reported shooter.

The FBI assumed the larger investigation of the shooting, working in tandem with the Secret Service.
